Rat runs

The Council has replied to complaints from DBA members:

Heavy Goods Vehicles in Buckingham Road

Thank you for your email dated 20  March 2006.
I note your concerns that heavy lorries are using Buckingham Road as a "rat run" in the mornings.
As you may be aware, there is a London wide lorry ban, which restricts heavy vehicles over 18, Tonnes from entering London other than on designated routes. These restrictions are enforced by the Association of Local Government, ALG, who I have asked to investigate this matter and take appropriate action.
To restrict a wider range of lorries and good vehicles however, a local weight limit of 7.5 tonnes would need to be introduced.
I am pleased to inform you that the Council has been successful in its bid for funding through our annual Borough Spending Plan 2006/7 submission to Transport for London for lorry control measures. As a result, I will place your request on the prioritisation list for further investigation. The process for assessing requests for traffic calming schemes is as follows:
·        A prioritisation based on a number of factors including the number of personal injury traffic accidents, the volume of traffic and pedestrian flow and the level of traffic speed compared with what would be considered to be a typical level for a similar status of road.
·        In addition, the proposed solution or measure will be assessed for any positive impact on vulnerable road users and on encouraging the use of alternative modes of transport to the private car.
·        The assessments are reviewed regularly and the highest priority schemes are taken forward to the design / consultation stage.
·        Schemes, which are not considered a high priority, will remain on the list for future review.
This assessment is carried out on an annual basis to determine which schemes can be implemented in the next financial year and the next programmed assessment will be undertaken shortly. I will, as a matter of course, advise you of the outcome of the assessment with regard to this particular request, once this has been completed.
I hope this information is of assistance, however, if you require any further information or require any clarification then please contact me on the address above.

Yours sincerely,
